Sunderland AFC Foundation of Light Football and Gymnastics Clubs
We regularly work with coaches from Sunderland AFC’s Foundation of Light. As part of this partnership we have introduced a range of afterschool sports clubs led by specialised sports coaches.
In KS1 the children have been taking part in an introductory gymnastics club on Tuesday evenings. The children have been working very hard to learn simple gymnastic routines that encourage the development of important motor skills.
In KS2 the children have been enjoying the opportunity to work with a specialist football coach. They have been taking part in a range of fun game based activities to help develop their football skills. Many children have also been attending the KS2 Gymnastics Club on Wednesday evenings where they have been learning a more complex routine that the children are keen to perform to the rest of the school.
Outdoor and Gardening Club
On Monday afternoons, Miss Haddow and her crew of mini-gardeners keep the school grounds in tip top condition and explore the outdoors.
The children weed the flower and vegetable beds, look after the poly tunnel, plant and harvest crops and do all sorts of activities linked to the outdoors.
Dance Club
Dance Club runs on Monday evenings, giving the children the chance to learn new dances to their favourite tunes – we are currently dancing to Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling. The children also help with the choreography.
Code Club
Miss Haddow runs Code Club after school on Thursdays for children in key stage 2.
The children have been learning to use computer code to create animations and games in Scratch. They are developing more and more advanced skills every week – soon they will be better at it than Miss Haddow and will have to start teaching her!!
We hope to start using other coding languages in future and may even have some robotic technology for the children to start programming! Watch this space!
Storytelling Club
On Thursdays with Miss Forbes we do storytelling club! Miss Forbes reads us a story and we do a fun activity at the end! We read ‘Room on the Broom’ and made witches hats. We also read ‘Dinosaurs Love Underpants’ and designed our own pair!
Dodgeball Club
Mr Turnbull has been running an action packed KS2 Dodgeball club on Tuesday evenings with a fantastic group of junior children. The children have had a great time learning to play various different versions of Dodgeball and the children’s attitude towards others and sportsmanship has been very impressive.
Choir
On Thursday evenings after school we meet in Mrs Shaw’s classroom for singing. We have been having fun singing lots of different songs we have chosen ourselves. As it is getting close to Christmas, we have started to sing traditional carols. This will come in useful when we visit Consett Tesco at the end of this month. We are also planning to visit the many old people’s homes in the area to sing them some Christmas carols and spread a little Christmas Cheer.
Running Club
Every Thursday at Miss Kelly’s running club, the children play games and do exercises to help them build up their stamina and improve their running. Each half term they will do a timed sprint and long distance run to see how they are improving. The children enjoy the competitiveness of the club and put in a huge amount of effort each week!
